We have done the research this year and picked the best fore-casted 7 days of fish feeding habits and tides in Port o Connor for every month this summer. We are only taking reservations for the selected dates and spots are very limited! For these 7 days of every month we have put a package together for all anglers to take advantage of which includes a ReelFly visor and long sleeve tee shirt for 2013 salt water season! The rates will remain the same of $500/day for two anglers and will include lunch, water and necessary equipment, (gratuities and fishing licenses are not included in price). Trips can be tailored to your needs/wants to fish for the all mighty Tarpon, Redfish, Tripletail, Speckled trout etc. A typical days itinerary will be as follows: On the water by 5:30 a.m, out for Tarpon in the morning and Redfish on the flats during the afternoon hours and return to dock by 3:30-4:00 that afternoon. A GoPro camera will be mounted on the boat to capture your experience and the video footage can be purchased for an additional $50. If your interested in getting in on this package and having a ReelFly Saltwater trip this summer the open dates are on a FIRST COME - FIRST SERVE basis and are as follows:

May 23-30th (24th booked)

The White Bass run has started! We did a scouting trip last week and found good numbers of White Bass, Stripers and Crappie running up the river to begin the spawn. As most of you know, the run does not last long but, when it's on......IT'S ON! Let us take you where the action is best and put you in the areas that are most concentrated with fish. This year we will be running the trips out of our Beavertail Polling Skiff, so the day will be comfortable and productive. Days are limited, call soon to reserve your spot!

The time has come to reserve your trip on the sacred Devils River. This year, we expect to arrange 5-7 trips from March to May and it's extremely important that reservations are made within the next couple of weeks. As of the new year, TPWD is issuing daily permits in an effort to limit entrance to individuals who visit. Just 12 will be assigned each day and several other regulations are in place that will need to be addressed well ahead of time to ensure all the "i"'s are dotted and "T"'s are crossed. As of right now there are NO Saturdays available for access during the month of April.

With all this said, on to the good stuff....

The Devils River is truly marvelous! If the pristine scenery doesn't capture your attention, then the monster Bass cruising the crystal clear waters will surely do the trick! This year we will be offering trips at $900 per person (min of 4ppl, and max of 6) to include two full days of fishing within a 15 mile stretch. All permits, camping supplies, meals, shuttling and one night of lodging will be provided. Video footage of the excursion can be purchased as well.

Itinerary:

Upon arrival to the Comstock area you will check in to your comfortable accomodations. There, you will spend the evening resting up and planning for the big adventure. The group will depart the morning after and launch at an undisclosed location to float and fish the entire day before arriving at camp on the rivers edge. Once there, a lodge tent with cots, tables and chairs will be set up along the rugged banks of the Devils River, to reflect on the day's events and catches over dinner. The next morning following breakfast, we will head out on the second leg of the journey, floating and fishing the majestic waters until sunset concluding another ReelFly Fishing adventure.

WARNING: This trip is not for the weary, disabled or faint of heart. If you are a diehard fisherman, this river is calling for you!

Fishing right now is excellent! The last four days have been non-stop dry fly action and the water clarity is perfect for sight-casting to big cruising Rainbow Trout. Above is first time fly fisher-woman Kayla, who landed her first trout on a stimulator pattern yesterday and fought several more throughout the afternoon. We have another stocking coming VERY soon and fishing will continue to get better and better, but now is the time for dries and emergers!

Todays Pro Tip: Be sure and check your fly line to make sure you have it dressed and cleaned so your line will ride up on top of the water, rather than below the surface; as this will cause fish to see your line and turn off off your fly. Fish are being very skittish right now because of the water clarity, so when drifting nymphs consider using clear, white, or yellow strike indicators and flourocarbon leaders/ tippet.

White Bass season is just around the corner and slots are filling fast, so call and reserve your spot soon. The end of January or the first part of February should be excellent! This year we will be using the Beavertail to get you on the action which will undoubately be awesome in the upcoming weeks! The next few months offer so many opportunities for anglers, so get off the couch...or out of the office and come take a ReelFly Fishing Advenure with us!

Fishing Reports:

The Guadalupe River is super low, clear and very fishable. While we had much success since the stocking, most of the fish were ready to spawn when they were stocked last month. They were full of little yellow eggs and the males were dark colored and full of milk as most of you probably noticed. Now, the fish appear to have moved off the redds (spawning beds) and are beginning to spread out some. This week has been tough with the full moon, cypress needle litter and barometric pressure, but......it will get much better VERY soon! Patterns that have been working well for us include, yellow sucker spawn egg, sparkle blood worms for attractor patterns and scuds size 20 in olive & tan, Rainbow Warriors and lightning bugs for droppers have been the ticket. Because the water is so clear, fluorocarbon tippet and white or clear indicators may help you get more bites.....Remember that the fish have been tasting lately and you need to have the hammer cocked when the indicator moves, or you will spend the day frustrated and missing fish.

Canyon Lake is fishing good right now for Crappie and Stripers, structure for crappie and drop offs with full sinking lines for stripers.

Port O' Connor Is awesome right now! The flats are full of big healthy Redfish and the water is crystal clear for sightcasting to the fish. Be aware however, that the water is so clear that the fish can also see you well ahead of them and spook easily in the thin, clear water. Remember to wear colors that help you blend in with the water or sky, the AQUA vanish with skyward camouflage would be a good choice for anglers headed to the salt right now. We fished the flats this weekend and despite the great conditions, we found the fishing to be tough due to the Redfish's lack of appetite. We did manage to land a few though and found white baitfish and shrimp patterns to produce. Nothing top water or gold were getting a look.

This time of year is prime time to wet a line on the Colorado River. The weather is perfect and the fishing is excellent right now for bass. The flows have began to hold steady and the water clarity has improved making sight-casting to cruising bass possible. Early morning topwater flies, (such as poppers) followed by natural color streamers fished later in the afternoon are working great. Fishing the Colorado right now, will help you sharpen your casting skills and prepare you for the upcoming Guadalupe River trout season around the corner.

If your wanting to catch a little bigger fish, than look no further than P.O.C. on the Texas coast. Right now we are catching bigtailing Redfish on the flats early morning and bull reds are showing up in the deeper water fished with sinking lines in the pass and jetties. Natural/ white streamers are working great in the flats and the edge of shelves, while weighted crab flies are working well in the 3ft and deeper sections.

Port O'Connor fishing is Supreme NOW! Huge schools of Jack Crevalle, like the photo above, and large pods of rolling Tarpon are being sighted everywhere outside the jetties and just offshore. Flats are full of tailing Redfish and the list goes on! Conditions have been excellent with calm waters in the morning and a light sea breeze during the afternoon to keep us cool. Now is a great time to come down to the coast and enjoy wonderful weather and fantastic fishing.

Redfish are everywhere in Port O Connor and polling through the flats will make your heart pound. Sightcasting opportunities have been phenomenal with big orange tails waving and 30" slowmoving reds visible due to the clear water and sunny skies. Redfish colors from maroon to pink to orange and coral really pop in the grassy flats. Brent is stealthy with the boat but you have to be too. They can see you as well, sometimes before you see them. Too much false casting will definitely spook the fish. Having your fly ready for Brent's call rather than practicing or blindcasting is best. Scanning the water constantly is the best thing to focus on. Before casting to an area Brent calls out, I like to wait a second, see the fish, then send my fly through the air. It almost always produces a nice land. This week, clients have had a lot of success in the flats. Redfish and Black drum of good size have been caught daily. Even some flounder have been caught and everyone knows they taste really good.

Get your fish on with Captain Brent Hodges! I promise you'll have fun!

OK Folks, Ashley here- I'm a believer! I've been coming to Port O Connor with Brent for a long time. I've never seen anything resembling a tarpon and I started to think it was a myth. Even watching the video of Ryan landing that one on the jetties- I still didn't believe. Sometimes it takes seeing something with your own eyes. Yesterday proved it to me.

The bay outside the pass had never been calm enough for us to really see any tarpon and this new Beavertail did kinda feel like being on a piece of paper in a swallowing sea- THAT IS UNTIL YESTERDAY! The conditions were absolutely perfect! The bay was like glass as we motored right out of the pass, no waves crashing, no holding on for dear life. Our eyes scanned side to side, near and far as we searched for schools of rolling Silver Kings. We made it to that sunken shrimpboat- it exists! I saw my first tarpon there! He was BIG and rolled 3 feet from the boat and disappeared! After trying there for a bit we detoured to the Jetties- it was like Tarpon heaven- they were everywhere! Outside the jetties, they circled and surfaced near the point, prob in the 100lb range. On the opposite side, baby tarpon in the 40-50lb arena surfaced and the water appeared to boil with them. An occassional 10lb tarpon would dart up in the air, putting on quite the show. I casted my arm off, never quite making my destination match my aim. Inside the jetties I was given at least 5 opportunities as they rose directly in front of the boat, maybe 10-15 feet. My heart was racing and I couldn't catch my breath. I couldn't get my fly in the water quick enough and all technique went out the door. You guys- it was like they were teasing me, flashing that pretty silver side and waving those yellowish fins at me- perhaps even laughing!

I couldn't have asked Brent to put the boat in better locations. Im sure he was ready to grab hold of the fly rod and get it done himself, but he was patient and kept drifting perfectly again and again. I had every possible chance I could ask for. While I am definitely bummed that I wasn't able to catch a one, I am actually more excited that I finally saw Texas Tarpon with my very own eyes. I dreamt all night about my perfect cast and I am pumped for another round of yesterday!

You need to see for yourself!

Best places to fly fish? -A topic that most always comes up when anglers are reminising about their day on the water with an ice cold beer. No matter the place or the fish, there is a phrase that always comes to mind when we recall moments from our best fishing.....

"You gotta pay your dues"- Whether you're on the river nymphing for that 28" rainbow, or fishing structure for a 12lb bass- maybe sightcasting to tailing Redfish in the flats early in the morning when the water is glass, or perhaps, hooking a 100lb Tarpon screaming line out. it holds true. The fact is, you'll only get those opportunities when you're on the water wetting a line. I've learned that the best fishing is circumstantial, based on the day you happen to be out and the luck that happens to be following you. Granted, having knowledge about the areas you are fishing, feeding habits, effective techniques and so on, will help you, but catching the fish of a lifetime is not going to happen overnight. It takes real desire and sometimes continual efforts, but each attempt is another memory made on the water.

Life seems to be in a big hurry these days and it can be difficult to get away to fish due to the busy schedules we think we have to keep. In the end it's the busy schedules that keep us- from living and fishing and making those memories! Because these fishing stories are so important to us, ReelFly Fishing Adventures has now moved into the techno world and capable of recording your memories. That's right, while your reel is smoking and you're making those school girl noises, we can be recording those moments for you! Now equipped with an HD GOPRO head cam, we are able to capture footage of your adventure as a souvenier to take home to show the world.

Now's the time! Port O Connor is currently the hot-spot and is predicted to stay that way for few more months. Large schools of Migratory Tarpon are rolling in the gulf, while giant pods of Redfish are tailing in the flats. We are scheduled to be on the water everyday until Aug 10th, helping clients chase these memories, but are ready to take your reservations from Aug 11- on for you. Take a break and let us help you make those memories that will never be forgotten.

Port O Connor is fishing excellent right! We fished yesterday in the flats where Ashley caught this nice 23" Redfish that was surronded by about 20 more as big or bigger! The flats are full of fish and the weather has been great. Most of our shots yesterday were within 20ft of the boat and fly of choice was the the shrimp/crab clouser. The bay was to rough to get to the Tarpon, but Redfish and trout are fishing so good, it's hard to get away from the flats anyway. Being that the bay is a little rough its important to find grass flats that will help filter most of the water making very clear and esy shots at tailing Redfish and cruising Redfish. Get a day in mind and give us a call to set up your trip to make some memories!

ReelFly Fishing Adventures is expanding to the coast! We are now taking reservations for Tarpon and Redfish trips in Port O Connor. I've been fishing Port O Connor for about 10 years and recently decided to expand our services there in the summer months. Above is my new Beavertail polling skiff guide boat which I will be using for our trips this summer. Port O Connor is an excellent destination for fly anglers of all skill levels with endless grass flats offering up-close polling opportunities for Redfish and Trout and even the all-mighty TARPON!

We fished Tues with Capt. Jack Campbell and Capt Kevin Townsend for the silver kings and despite the rough seas from a westerly wind had luck on the fly. Throughout the day we had around 30 Tarpon roll around us over 80lbs and some even over 100lbs. Around 2:30 p.m. we found a pod of Tarpon in the 40-60lb range holding in a cut in about 15 feet of water off the rocks and managed to boat a really nice 40lb fish and hooked another one the same size.

If you’re looking to get away this summer to an excellent place for some amazing fishing, give us a call and let us help you plan your trip. We can customize your trip with lodging, gear and of course fishing to fit your needs and get you in the action!

Full day trips are $500 for two anglers and include lunch, gear, flies and memories that will last a lifetime!

Canyon Lake Striper fishing has been very productive lately with average size catches being in the 20" range. Clouser minnow patterns in gray and white fished with a full sinking line has worked best lately in 25-40 feet of water and also on the surface under feeding birds. Last week we had a 20 fish day on the lake, with the smallest being around 17 and the largest being around 25". Black bass are also being caught on similiar patterns in the 2-6lb range. The weather should be holding for us this week to get out and catch some more and hopefully find some bigger fish! We are currently fishing out of our 18ft bay boat untill August while our new custom technical polling skiff is being built. We will be in Port O Connor next week chasing Tarpon and searching for some tailing redfish.

We are now taking reservations for saltwater trips for September-November when the Redfish and big trout will be at its best! If you are interested in taking a trip give us a call and we will get you on the schedule for either the saltwater, lake or the numerous great fishing rivers in our area.

Fished with Ashley in Ryans new Aire boat on Tuesday. Despite the full moon curse, we had some good luck fishing and the weather and scenery were awesome! The better patterns were again, size 20 olive scuds, Caddis Poopah and pink San Juan Worms. Along the way we turned over rocks and identified some different bugs, and found a huge number of everything! In the upcoming weeks I would seriously stock up on Caddis, from larvae to dries and have several colors of midge patterns on hand. Mayfly nymphs were also very prevelant and almost every rock had one under it from size 12-22. All and all we landed around 15 fish and missed several others either from break-offs or just not paying attention when the indicator went under. We have one more stocking from GRTU VERY soon, so trout fishing will contunie to be good and you should start catching some smallies pretty soon with buggers along the banks in the deeper pools. Get it, while the getting is good!

Well, good news everyone!....Trout Unlimited will begin stocking trout soon on the Guadalupe River and TPWD is said to begin stocking around the first part of December. The fish need a good 24 hours to acclimate and settle in. The river is low but floatable and the water is gin clear; as I stated in the last news article, make sure to have a good pair of wading boots because the rocks are slick with algae. The river is currently running just under 60cfs and water temps vary from 58 at the dam to around 62- 5 miles downstream. Again, there are still some hogs left from last year still in the river and with the upcoming stocking we should see many more after this weekend. We're set to have nice fall weather in the mid 70's through next week. Its about that time to grab a buddy or family member and get down here and enjoy Hill Country fishing at its best! Here at ReelFly we've been scouting the river to find some different options to float and fish. We've found several great areas, away from the crowds, that have good currents for drift fishing. We're still offering unbeatable prices on trips and lodging so, call now to reserve your spot! 830 899-6177 or 830 515-7285

The fishing is great on the Colorado River! Currently the river has had reduced flows providing for very clear and skinny water. Fishing conditions for bass....especially small-mouth bass, are excellent! We've had great luck on various clouser minnow patterns and some top water patterns. If you're an experienced fly fisherman, it's very likely to land anywhere from 50+ fish in a days trip! The weather, river quality and fishing action is making this time an especially great time to get out and fish.

Over the next few weeks, we're offering a FANTASTIC DEAL for anyone interested in experiencing a day trip on the Colorado River. From NOW UNTIL NOVEMBER 21, We're offering a two night stay in our cabin with a full day guided trip on the Colorado River for $425. This price includes shuttle to and from the river, stream-side lunch, light breakfast and any loaner equipment for two fisherman.

After enjoying a great day of fishing in the cooler temps, take the opportunity to sit around a campfire at The Creel, admire the hill country views, soak in hot tub and just.... RELAX! Dates are very limited; as of now we have only a few spots left: Nov 6th & 7th, 15& 16th, 18th & 19th and 21st & 22ND. Call now to RESERVE A TRIP!

The fishing was consistent with average size bass being caught in the 1-2lb range. Chartreuse and natural color Clouser minnows worked well for us on the Colorado, while top water plugs and Clousers worked on the San Marcos River. Smallmouth, Largemouth and Guadalupe bass are all biting well and it's been common to catch all three species in a full day’s trip. Water clarity has been very good on both rivers allowing us to do some sight casting and visualize almost every take! The weather, rivers and fish are all being very cooperative right now allowing for a great time to get out and do some fishing!

Mike Swaim of South Carolina called and asked for a trip to catch two specific species he's never caught before, a Guadalupe Bass and Rio Grande Perch. He decided to book a trip and leave the path of Irene to come catch these species he's had on his bucket list. Despite the hottest weekend of the summer he flew down and we got it done. We were on the water at 7 and had caught both species, as well as 4 others by lunch. The breeze blowing off the cool river and shade of the San Marcos river canopy made a great fishing day for Mike, now he's off to the Trinity River to catch Alligator Gar......Good Luck Mike, stay cool and send us some info on catching those 100lb Alligator Gar on the fly!

Broke-in the new Aire Super Puma raft today with John and Mike from El Paso. We fished a full day on the San Marcos River. The fishing was hit and miss, but the river and weather was great. We enjoyed a nice scenic trip with scattered bass and perch along the way. John hooked up with a gar and they pulled in several Guadalupe and largemouth bass. Now is a great time to book a trip with a friend to enjoy the shady canopy of the cool San Marcos River.

Bass fishing is great right now, on the San Marcos river we're having luck on top water poppers and the Colorado is producing nice fish on Chartruese Clousers. We fished the last two days on both rivers catching a good number of small largemouth and small mouth bass and a few nice size fish. The water in both rivers is excellent, the Colorado is getting back to clear and the San Marcos river has a perfect flow.

Fishing conditions have improved since last week. Steve and Danny from Cleburne, Texas fished a full day on 03/22/2011 and we had much better luck than the days before. We managed to hook-up around 10 fish and land about 7 or 8, all being in the 16-20" range. The flows are still way down, but the weather is nice for wet wading, the spring break crowd is gone and the fish are biting. We found hares ear nymphs to be the most productive pattern in the deeper holes, as well as blood worms and pheasant tail nymphs.

Fishing conditions contuniue to be tough, although not catching the numbers as usual, we are catching some bigger fish. Took Frank and Fred for full day trip on 03/09 and a half day on 03/10/2011, we managed about 9 or 10 hook-ups with around 5 fish in the boat the first day and around 4 hook ups with one pig landed on the half day. The flows are still very low and some of the fish are bitting very softly. We found smaller midge patterns working (size 20-22) with paying close attention to your indicator for a fast hook set. Here's one of the bigger fish of the trip.

The fish seem to be winding up their spawning dance and are starting to get back to feeding and moving around the river. Some patterns that have been working well include, Rs2's, Pheasant tails in the size 18's and 20's, March Brown Nymphs, black Serendipity 18's and Rainbow warriors among many others. Hopefully with a little more rain, the flows will increase some giving the fish more areas to move around to. February and March are booking fast, so be sure and get some dates on the books soon. See you on the river!

Fishing is getting better and better everyday. The Trout have been in spawning mode making them pre-occupied from do much feeding the last couple of weeks. We've noticed in the last couple of days however, this is starting to end and the fish are beginning to to return to their ussual feeding habits. The most prevelant hatches on the water this week have been tricos, caddis and hexgenia mayflies. The fish are getting a great deal of pressure right now due to the low water and number of anglers on the river, but making the right drift and paying close attention to detail, you'll be able to catch many big fish now.

12/28/2010
Todays fishing produced around 15-20 hookups with 10-12 landed fish. Finally getting some much needed rain!

The Guadalupe River has had some changes this year. The flows are down and the gravel deposits from the summer floods have made some of the good holes we fished last year, turn into ankle deep non-fishable riffles this year. Trout Unlimited has begun stocking and the trout are big and healthy, but be informed, some of the areas our chapter of T.U. has stocked in the previous years, have not been stocked this year. Many people are seeing good numbers of fish but are having trouble getting any to bite. The reason for this is because many of these fish that are brought in from the hatchery are in full spawn mode when they arrive and aren't extremely focused on eating right now. We've caught a number of trout spilling with eggs. Rest assured this usually only lasts a couple of weeks and the fishing will be back to normal soon. Recently we've sampled some of the areas of the river to find what the trout are feeding on and we've found several aquatic insects on the buffett. Tricos, Damsels, caddis, scuds, crawfish and tubifex worms being some of the most plentiful. Right now good patterns are peach eggs, gray woolybuggers, pheasant tail nymphs, and various size 18-20 midges. If the flows rise, add hexegenia patterns and san juan worms to your menu. Remember when you head to the river take your time and observe your surroundings, the river is shallow and clear, making the fish very spooky. Take a sample with your seine to see what bugs you're imitating and try and match what the fish are feeding on. Our next stocking will hopefully be around Christmas. Maybe we'll get some much needed rain to bring the river back up, making for excellent winter fishing! See you on the Guad!

We're looking forward to involving them more in the local trout fishing we love so much and hope that we can direct them on river access and Hill Country activities.

From Fort Worth we are heading to Flippin Arkansas to fish the White and Norfork Rivers. We hope to catch some spawning big browns! Wish us luck!

Today I scheduled a half day trip with a new angler, Bobby Martin. He caught over 10 rainbows on DRY flies! The fish are big and healthy and the water is super clear! We started the day out by drifting and after a hooking a few we noticed many trout coming to the surface and eating bugs, so we decided to throw some dry flies and WOW! At one hole alone, we hooked into over 10 fish! It may be tubing season, but only 6 kayaks come by us and just a couple rafts, no rubber hatch- all after 11am. Aside from the heat, it really felt like we were fishing a river up north- cold water, fish rising and no traffic. Here on the Guad, it is not often that we get such opportunities to sight-cast using dry flies to so many fish. Opportunity is now, Truly a Great Day!

SEE THE FRESH FISH VIDEO for today's dry fly action

Despite flooding river predictions, rain and wind. we had two great days on the Guadalupe and the San Marcos Rivers. Brett and Gary of the Texas Fly Fishers out of Houston made nasty weather predictions turn into great fishing memories. On the first day of their trips on the Guadalupe River, Canyon lake was scheduled to release 1200cfs and we were told that we may not be able to fish untill noon and fishing was going to be tough, we fished the enitre day with stretched lines and perfect conditions. The second day we decided to hit the San Marcos and again, nasty weather was predicted to make our day miserable. We had little rain and nice flows throughout, again making another relaxing and enjoyable day to fish.

These two days reminded me of an old fisherman saying......"The best time to fish, is when it's raining and when it's not"!

Fishing has been incredible! Two ReelFly boats netted over 25 fish on March 26th, with avg size fish of 16" and some going to 22-24"! The fish are feeding excellent as mayflies, march browns, PMD's and caddis flies are hatching everywhere. The flows are perfect and, in my opinion, the fishing is the Best it's been all season. Tim, pictured, landed two incredible fish that you would expect to find in places like the White River or Colorado. Take a look at the gallery to see some of the latest action.

Trout fishing is still excellent on the Guadalupe River. The flows are perfect and trout fishing has been holding steady with good numbers of healthy big fish. Lately our weather has varied from sunny calm days, to windy rainy days and the fishing outcome has remained the same- GREAT! Since the recent high flows, the fish are holding in areas that we've not seen in years, allowing steady fishing opportunities throughout the entire float. Our prices allow anglers the opportuninty to not only take great float trips, but also have enough left over change to get a nice place to stay. For the same price other guides charge for a day on the river, you get a full day float trip for two as well as one night of lodging at The Creel, complete with a 6 person hot tub, fireplace and outdoor kitchen. What are you waiting for?......Call us today to make your reservations and take full advantage of this opportunity while you can!
