We are only taking reservations for the selected dates and spots are very limited! For these 7 days of every month we have put a package together for all anglers to take advantage of which includes a ReelFly visor and long sleeve tee shirt for 2013 salt water season! The rates will remain the same of $500/day for two anglers and will include lunch, water and necessary equipment, (gratuities and  fishing licenses are not included in price). Trips can be tailored to your needs/wants to fish for the all mighty Tarpon, Redfish, Tripletail, Speckled trout etc.  A typical days itinerary will be as follows: On the water by 5:30 a.m, out for Tarpon in the morning and Redfish on the flats during the afternoon hours and return to dock by 3:30-4:00 that afternoon. A GoPro camera will be mounted on the boat to capture your experience and the video footage can be purchased for an additional $50. As of the new year, TPWD is issuing daily permits in an effort to limit entrance to individuals who visit.  Just 12 will be assigned each day and several other regulations are in place that will need to be addressed well ahead of time to ensure all the "i"'s are dotted and "T"'s are crossed.  As of right now there are NO Saturdays available for access during the month of April. With all this said, on to the good stuff.... The Devils River is truly marvelous! If the pristine scenery doesn't capture your attention, then the monster Bass cruising the crystal clear waters will surely do the trick! This year we will be offering trips at $900 per person (min of 4ppl, and max of 6) to include two full days of fishing within a 15 mile stretch.  All permits, camping supplies, meals, shuttling and one night of lodging will be provided. Video footage of the excursion can be purchased as well.  Itinerary: Upon arrival to the Comstock area you will check in to your comfortable accomodations. There, you will spend the evening resting up and planning for the big adventure.  The group will depart the morning after and launch at an undisclosed location to float and fish the entire day before arriving at camp on the rivers edge.  Once there, a lodge tent with cots, tables and chairs will be set up along the rugged banks of the Devils River, to reflect on the day's events and catches over dinner. The next morning following breakfast, we will head out on the second leg of the journey, floating and fishing the majestic waters until sunset concluding another ReelFly Fishing adventure.    WARNING: This trip is not for the weary, disabled or faint of heart. The last four days have been non-stop dry fly action and the water clarity is perfect for sight-casting to big cruising Rainbow Trout.  Above is first time fly fisher-woman Kayla, who landed her first trout on a stimulator pattern yesterday and fought several more throughout the afternoon.  We have another stocking coming VERY soon and fishing will continue to get better and better, but now is the time for dries and emergers!  Todays Pro Tip:  Be sure and check your fly line to make sure you have it dressed and cleaned so your line will ride up on top of the water, rather than below the surface; as this will cause fish to see your line and turn off off your fly.  Fish are being very skittish right now because of the water clarity, so when drifting nymphs consider using clear, white, or yellow strike indicators and flourocarbon leaders/ tippet. Now, the fish appear to have moved off the redds (spawning beds) and are beginning to spread out some. This week has been tough with the full moon, cypress needle litter and barometric pressure, but......it will get much better VERY soon! Patterns that have been working well for us include, yellow sucker spawn egg, sparkle blood worms for attractor patterns and scuds size 20 in olive & tan, Rainbow Warriors and lightning bugs for droppers have been the ticket.  Because the water is so clear, fluorocarbon tippet and white or clear indicators may help you get more bites.....Remember that the fish have been tasting lately and you need to have the hammer cocked when the indicator moves, or you will spend the day frustrated and missing fish.   <img title="male trout on the guad" src="http://reelfly.net/im_images/trout_fishing_pic_for_news.jpg" alt="guadalupe trout" width="500" height="375" />   Canyon Lake is fishing good right now for Crappie and Stripers, structure for crappie and drop offs with full sinking lines for stripers.   Port O' Connor Is awesome right now!  The flats are full of big healthy Redfish and the water is crystal clear for sightcasting to the fish.  Be aware however, that the water is so clear that the fish can also see you well ahead of them and spook easily in the thin, clear water.  Remember to wear colors that help you blend in with the water or sky, the AQUA vanish with skyward camouflage would be a good choice for anglers headed to the salt right now. We fished the flats this weekend and despite the great conditions, we found the fishing to be tough due to the Redfish's lack of appetite. Too much false casting will definitely spook the fish. Having your fly ready for Brent's call rather than practicing or blindcasting is best. Scanning the water constantly is the best thing to focus on. Before casting to an area Brent calls out, I like to wait a second, see the fish, then send my fly through the air. It almost always produces a nice land. This week, clients have had a lot of success in the flats. Redfish and Black drum of good size have been caught daily. Even some flounder have been caught and everyone knows they taste really good. I've never seen anything resembling a tarpon and I started to think it was a myth. Even watching the video of Ryan landing that one on the jetties- I still didn't believe. Sometimes it takes seeing something with your own eyes.  Yesterday proved it to me. The bay outside the pass had never been calm enough for us to really see any tarpon and this new Beavertail did kinda feel like being on a piece of paper in a swallowing sea- THAT IS UNTIL YESTERDAY!  The conditions were absolutely perfect!  The bay was like glass as we motored right out of the pass, no waves crashing, no holding on for dear life. Our eyes scanned side to side, near and far as we searched for schools of rolling Silver Kings.  We made it to that sunken shrimpboat- it exists! I saw my first tarpon there! He was BIG and rolled 3 feet from the boat and disappeared!  After trying there for a bit we detoured to the Jetties- it was like Tarpon heaven- they were everywhere!  Outside the jetties, they circled and surfaced near the point, prob in the 100lb range. On the opposite side, baby tarpon in the 40-50lb arena surfaced and the water appeared to boil with them. An occassional 10lb tarpon would dart up in the air, putting on quite the show. I casted my arm off, never quite making my destination match my aim. Inside the jetties I was given at least 5 opportunities as they rose directly in front of the boat, maybe 10-15 feet. My heart was racing and I couldn't catch my breath. I couldn't get my fly in the water quick enough and all technique went out the door.  You guys- it was like they were teasing me, flashing that pretty silver side and waving those yellowish fins at me- perhaps even laughing!  I couldn't have asked Brent to put the boat in better locations. Im sure he was ready to grab hold of the fly rod and get it done himself, but he was patient and kept drifting perfectly again and again. I had every possible chance I could ask for. While I am definitely bummed that I wasn't able to catch a one, I am actually more excited that I finally saw Texas Tarpon with my very own eyes. "You gotta pay your dues"- Whether you're on the river nymphing for that 28" rainbow, or fishing structure for a 12lb bass- maybe sightcasting to tailing Redfish in the flats early in the morning when the water is glass, or perhaps, hooking a 100lb Tarpon screaming line out. it holds true. The fact is, you'll only get those opportunities when you're on the water wetting a line. I've learned that the best fishing is circumstantial, based on the day you happen to be out and the luck that happens to be following you.  Granted, having knowledge about the areas you are fishing, feeding habits, effective techniques and so on, will help you, but catching the fish of a lifetime is not going to happen overnight. It takes real desire and sometimes continual efforts, but each attempt is another memory made on the water. We are currently fishing out of our 18ft bay boat untill August while our new custom technical polling skiff is being built.  We will be in Port O Connor next week chasing Tarpon and searching for some tailing redfish.  We are now taking reservations for saltwater trips for September-November when the Redfish and big trout will be at its best!  If you are interested in taking a trip give us a call and we will get you on the schedule for either the saltwater, lake or the numerous great fishing rivers in our area. The better patterns were again, size 20 olive scuds, Caddis Poopah and pink San Juan Worms.  Along the way we turned over rocks and identified some different bugs, and found a huge number of everything! The river is low but floatable and the water is gin clear; as I stated in the last news article, make sure to have a good pair of wading boots because the rocks are slick with algae.  The river is currently running just under 60cfs and water temps vary from 58 at the dam to around 62- 5 miles downstream.  Again, there are still some hogs left from last year still in the river and with the upcoming stocking we should see many more after this weekend. We're set to have nice fall weather in the mid 70's through next week. Its about that time to grab a buddy or family member and get down here and enjoy Hill Country fishing at its best! The fishing was consistent with average size bass being caught in the 1-2lb range. Chartreuse and natural color Clouser minnows worked well for us on the Colorado, while top water plugs and Clousers worked on the San Marcos River.  Smallmouth, Largemouth and Guadalupe bass are all biting well and it's been common to catch all three species in a full day’s trip.  Water clarity has been very good on both rivers allowing us to do some sight casting and visualize almost every take! Took Frank and Fred for full day trip on 03/09 and a half day on 03/10/2011, we managed about 9 or 10 hook-ups with around 5 fish in the boat the first day and around 4 hook ups with one pig landed on the half day. The flows are still very low and some of the fish are bitting very softly. We found smaller midge patterns working (size 20-22) with paying close attention to your indicator for a fast hook set. The fish seem to be winding up their spawning dance and are starting to get back to feeding and moving around the river.  Some patterns that have been working well include, Rs2's, Pheasant tails in the size 18's and 20's, March Brown Nymphs, black Serendipity 18's and Rainbow warriors among many others.  Hopefully with a little more rain, the flows will increase some giving the fish more areas to move around to.  February and March are booking fast, so be sure and get some dates on the books soon.  See you on the river! The Trout have been in spawning mode making them pre-occupied from do much feeding the last couple of weeks. We've noticed in the last couple of days however, this is starting to end and the fish are beginning to to return to their ussual feeding habits. The most prevelant hatches on the water this week have been tricos, caddis and hexgenia mayflies. The fish are getting a great deal of pressure right now due to the low water and number of anglers on the river, but making the right drift and paying close attention to detail, you'll be able to catch many big fish now. 12/28/2010 Todays fishing produced around 15-20 hookups with 10-12 landed fish. From now until Christmas we'll take 10% off any gift certificate purchase.  Gift Certificates can be for any of the following: Half Day Trip, Full Day Trip, Lodging, Instruction, Casting Lessons, Walk and Wade Trips or a combination of any services. +++++HAPPY HOLIDAYS!+++++ Dec 2010 fishing/river report http://reelfly.net/news/dec-2010-fishing-river-report http://reelfly.net/rss/dec-2010-fishing-river-report fishing adventures Wed, 08 Dec 2010 00:00:00 -0600 The Guadalupe River has had some changes this year.  The flows are down and the gravel deposits from the summer floods have made some of the good holes we fished last year, turn into ankle deep non-fishable riffles this year.  Trout Unlimited has begun stocking and the trout are big and healthy,  but be informed, some of the areas our chapter of T.U. has stocked in the previous years, have not been stocked this year.  Many people are seeing good numbers of fish but are having trouble getting any to bite.  The reason for this is because many of these fish that are brought in from the hatchery are in full spawn mode when they arrive and aren't extremely focused on eating right now. We've caught a number of trout spilling with eggs. Rest assured this usually only lasts a couple of weeks and the fishing will be back to normal soon.  Recently we've sampled some of the areas of the river to find what the trout are feeding on and we've found several aquatic insects on the buffett.  Tricos, Damsels, caddis, scuds, crawfish and tubifex worms being some of the most plentiful.  Right now good patterns are peach eggs, gray woolybuggers, pheasant tail nymphs, and various size 18-20 midges. If the flows rise, add hexegenia patterns and san juan worms to your menu.  Remember when you head to the river take your time and observe your surroundings, the river is shallow and clear, making the fish very spooky.  Take a sample with your seine to see what bugs you're imitating and try and match what the fish are feeding on.  Our next stocking will hopefully be around Christmas.  Maybe we'll get some much needed rain to bring the river back up, making for excellent winter fishing! Aside from the heat, it really felt like we were fishing a river up north- cold water, fish rising and no traffic. Here on the Guad, it is not often that we get such opportunities to sight-cast using dry flies to so many fish. Opportunity is now, Truly a Great Day!
